Stop Bid to Slaughter Elephants for Trophies and Ivory!

The African Elephant Conservation and Legal Ivory Possession Act- Bill HR226, attempts to reverse current restrictions on trophy hunting and the ivory trade by amending the African Elephant Conservation Act of 1988 (AECA). We must stop this destructive and horrendous bill from passing!

In 2014, President Obama's National Strategy for Combating Wildlife Trafficking put additional crucial protections in place for elephants. The new administration seeks to destroy this protection and put elephants at even greater risk.

This backwards bill is sponsored by Alaska Congressman Don Young, formerly a licensed trapper, whose pro-hunting agendas against wild animals are sickening.

Though claiming to protect elephants through conservation, this bill will DECREASE elephant protections in two ways. First, it would give trophy hunters permission to import elephant body parts from their African kill trips, further decimating wild populations and destroying families.

Second, it would reverse the NEAR TOTAL ivory ban put in place in July of 2016 by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service by creating more loopholes in the domestic trade of ivory. Allowing ivory to be both imported, exported, and also traded within the US, this reversal would increase the US ‘s complicity in the African elephant slaughter. Any open trade in ivory gives poachers reason to continue the slaughtering of elephants for their tusks, and the fact that this proposition is coming from the US is appalling.

This bill benefits elephant hunters and poachers- not elephants!
