Dogs and Cats Are Companions and Not Food in the US

The dog and cat meat trade are not as exclusive to Asian countries as one may think. Dog and cat meat consumption have been reported in Switzerland, Nigeria, Jamaica, India, and surprisingly within the US, to name just a few. While some states like California and New York and a handful of others prohibit the slaughter or consumption of dog and cat meat, the other 44 states do not. While we, as an animal protection organization, do fight the dog and cat meat trade internationally, it is important to make sure we clean our own house. It is vital that we pass legislation to protect American cats and dogs from becoming meat for human consumption.

Animal Hope and Wellness Foundation with the support of Social Compassion Legislation helped write H.R.1406 with Congressman Alcee Hastings, (D-FL).

“The Dog and Cat Meat Trade Prohibition Act of 2017 (H.R.1406) will provide protection to dogs and cats in the 44 states that currently have no laws prohibiting the shipping, transporting, moving, delivering, receiving, possessing, purchasing, selling, or donating of dogs or cats to be slaughtered for human consumption.”

In Defense of Animals will be working with Animal Hope and Wellness Foundation and Social Compassion Legislation to help get this legislation passed. Dogs and cats play a vital role as companions in American society and it is our duty to protect their rights and well being as we simultaneously work to protect farmed animals as well.
