In Defense of Animals Takes a Bold New Initiative to Fight Activist Burnout

San Rafael, Calif. (September 14, 2015) In Defense of Animals (IDA) recently launched the Animal Activist Helpline, the first support service in the world to provide free telephone, e-counseling, and self-care resources for animal activists. The Helpline is part of IDA’s Sustainable Activism Campaign, offering emotional and spiritual resources for animal activists.

‘’As an international animal protection organization, this was a critical step for us to take. We can use the technology at our fingertips to connect and strengthen our activist community. Now support and resources are freely available for those who are determined to create a better world.’’ ~ Nadia Schilling, Helpline Coordinator, IDA.

Why is this so important? When activists burn out, it’s a major setback for justice everywhere. For social justice movements to thrive, individuals within them need community and a place to turn for support and understanding. Without it, their hard work and efforts can be an ongoing struggle. According to research compiled by Bert Klandermans, forty to fifty percent of activists experience such severe burnout that they need to leave their activism temporarily. The Animal Activist Helpline ensures that activists can continue to help animals for the long haul.

The Animal Activist Helpline is currently available to activists in the United States and Canada via the toll free number, 1 (800) 705-0425, or by email at helpline@idausa.org. IDA plans to expand these services and encourages other social justice movements to join their efforts. For more information, visit: www.idausa.org/helpline.
