Letter to the Press To The Editor: Perhaps Lisa Gilford, owner of Le Chien Pet Salon, should put the caring she claims to have for dogs into action by ceasing to contribute to the suffering of millions of homeless dogs by not buying and selling pure bred dogs from puppy mills ("Puppy love", July 31). Instead, she might use her store space to house and adopt out some of the tens of thousands of dogs waiting in cages at the city shelter every year; innocent, loving animals who are hoping to be brought to someone's home instead of to the shelter's killing room. While Le Chien sells its puppies, millions of puppies across the country are being killed in animal shelters due to lack of homes. And on puppy mills, "breeder dogs" - female animals forced to churn out litter after litter - lead sad and miserable lives. If it weren't for pet shops like Le Chien, who contribute to the problem by treating animals as if they were mere commodities to trade in instead of sentient beings, the suffering of countless puppies and dogs would dramatically decrease. Then Lisa could make her money catering to celebrities' dogs and wouldn't have to complain of feeling sick. I hope the ethical people picketing her store continue to be there until she makes the logical and compassionate choice. The ball is in your court, Lisa. Sincerely, |
