Urgent: Tell Congress to Ban Horse and Burro Slaughter Now!

This alert is no longer active, but here for reference. Animals still need your help.

The sale of wild horses and burros to slaughter has been banned by Congress, but loopholes have allowed the killing to relentlessly continue. Not only that, but domestic equines have also been sold to slaughter by the tens of thousands every year. We must urge Congress to stop horse slaughter now by passing the SAFE Act before the bill dies in December at the conclusion of this 2-year session.

The Wild and Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971 (WFRHBA) required that wild horses and burros be protected as "living symbols of the historic and pioneer spirit of the West." However, the 2004 Burns Amendment to the Act wipes out this federal protection and permits the sale by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to probable kill-buyers. The Bureau recently issued an internal memorandum (IM 2018-066) that would expedite the process for the mass sales to slaughter.

The last legal horse slaughterhouse closed in the U.S. in 2007. However, most Americans would be shocked to learn that over 100,000 U.S. horses and burros are shipped to slaughter in other countries every year despite the fact that 80% of Americans are against horse slaughter.

Domestic horses and burros are also vulnerable to the unconscionable fate of meeting their end at slaughterhouses. Thousands of them end up at auctions where kill-buyers snap them up at bargain prices. The horror of what happens to these horses after they are sold at auction, with absolutely no thought for their humane treatment, has been well documented. We must ask Congress to put a stop to this!
